Apparently the reason for the odd location of huuge mirrors is because there are no guards on the trains so the mirror helps the driver to see if thereb are people near the doors , getting on and off etc !! Ahhh now I can sleep peacefully tonight !

I will add that fare dodging on the Southend->Fenchurch Street line is both rife and simple. You can ride the full distance without problem.
Unless you're us that is. We had to rush for a train once, bypassed the ticket office and figured we'd buy at the other end. Of course, we got on the fast train to London, so the inspector that found us charged us the full journey to London, then London to West Horndon, then West Horndon to Basildon. OUr £8-each journey worked out to over £20 each.
